Lots of big-headline local news in Thursday’s (Jan. 28) Press Herald.

Major story one: The Portland Planning Board clears the way for construction of an 18-story apartment building, to be the city’s tallest structure. The 265 rental units would have monthly rents of up to $2,000. Oh, wait, 27 of the units would be set aside “to be made affordable for median income” singles making up to $70,630 and families earning up to $100,900. Pretty healthy median income.

With similar big-city type projects already built, and others in the offing, will Portland continue shaping up to be the Manhattan of Maine? By the way, how’s that proposed homeless shelter coming along?

Major story two: A man who once ran for governor sells his 15,455-square-foot Cape Elizabeth uber-mansion, complete with 4,000-bottle wine vault and expansive piano room, to a member of the Bush family for $7.55 million. “This place is huge, and much too big for the two of us,” the seller explains. Of the broad ocean view, he adds, “I tell people that on a clear day I can see Portugal.”

The realtor who represented the new owners said, “I hope they love it. I can’t imagine someone wouldn’t.”

Me neither.
