Dr. Arthur S. Billings

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Dr. Arthur S. Billings, 86, died of natural causes Jan. 17, 2021, at the Masonic Home of Florida in St Petersburg. He previously resided in Treasure Island, Fla. with his wife, Patricia Trenkle Billings.

Arthur was born May 26, 1934 to Herold and Naomi (Stevens) Billings in Presque Isle where he spent his childhood. Arthur graduated from the University of Maine at Orono with a bachelor’s degree in 1956. He went on to pursue a career in medicine, graduating in 1960 from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine, Kirksville, Mo.

Shortly thereafter he married Patricia Trenkle and moved back to his home state of Maine where he interned and completed his residency in Radiology. Arthur went on to become a partner of Diagnostic Radiology at Brighton Medical Center, Portland, where he also served as chairmen of the radiology department for 20 years (1972-1992) as well as serving on the board of trustees and lecturing at the New England College of Medicine in Biddeford.

Dr. Billings gave his life to his patients, but he gave his heart to sailing. This Maine native knew the joy of open water and took every opportunity to be sailing the Maine waters. In 1992, Art and Patricia set sale on their beloved Bristol 47.7 they christened “Cynosure” and circumnavigated the world from 1992-2001, an accomplishment Art had always dreamed of. Upon their return, they retired in Treasure Island, Fla.

In addition to sailing, Dr. Billings was a proud member of Portland Yacht Club, St. Petersburg Yacht Club, CCA, Sail and Power Squadron of St. Petersburg and the Freemasonry.

In addition to his wife Patricia, Arthur is survived by his three sons, Stephen S. and wife Jenny of South Portland, David J. and Panida of San Pedro, Calif., Michael A. and wife Kristin of St. Petersburg, Fla.; his sister, Barbara Armstrong and husband Stephen, Exeter, N.H.; and granddaughter, Brittany Hallett of St. Petersburg, Fla.
