Joanne “Joey” R. Runyon

YARMOUTH – Joanne “Joey” R. Runyon, 74, passed away very unexpectedly, of natural causes, on April 4, 2021, at Maine Medical Center in Portland. She was born in Plainfield, N.J. on June 13, 1946, the eldest of four children born to Elmer and Claire (Reid) Runyon.

She graduated from Gould Academy in Bethel, the University of New Hampshire (BA), Katherine Gibbs (secretarial studies), and Babson College (MBA). She has been a CPA since 1981 specializing in tax matters. She started her career as an accountant in the Boston office of Price Waterhouse. On returning to Maine she worked for Peat Marwick Mitchill in Portland. She has long been an independent CPA with offices in Scarborough, later followed by moves to Falmouth, Freeport and Yarmouth.

The family had a cottage on Colcord Pond in Porter for over 60 years. In 1996, Joey built her own cottage next door to her parents and shared life on the pond with them. She had a lovely, picturesque yard and gardens that was a welcome respite from her annual tax preparation season. She also learned a new skill as a gifted decorative painter. Her gifts to family members have become treasured keepsakes of her creative inspiration. In 2016 Joey sold her cottage, down-sizing, taking on fewer tax clients as well as freeing herself up from her gardening activities. She hosted many a family gathering at her cottage on Colcord Pond and later at her home in Yarmouth celebrating birthdays and her parents’ anniversary. She fully retired in 2020. Her dedication to overseeing the needs of her parents in their later years was selfless and virtually continuous.

She is predeceased by her parents; and is survived by her siblings, brothers Sandy Runyon and Bill Runyon, and sister, Sarah Burgess; one niece and five nephews; and two great -nieces and two great-nephews.

The family would like to extend a special thanks for the wonderful care and kindness of Joey’s care team of the Intensive Care Unit at Maine Medical Center. At Joey’s request there will be no funeral or memorial service. Arrangements are respectfully handled by Poitras, Neal and York Funeral Home, Cornish.
