Jane Walker Nutting

SACO – Jane Walker Nutting, 93, moved from life to life Friday, Jan. 21, 2022, at Seal Rock Healthcare in Saco, Maine surrounded by family. She was born April 18, 1928 in Nashville, Tenn., the daughter of William Lloyd and Marion Walker.

Jane met her husband of 72 years, Wallace Hall Nutting, when they were both 12 at the First Parish Congregational Church in Saco. While Wallace attended Exeter, Jane attended Walnut Hill High School in Massachusetts. After graduation, Wallace attended West Point Military Academy and Jane went to Middlebury College in Vermont. When Wallace graduated, he and Jane were married in the First Parish Congregational Church on June 17, 1950. While on their honeymoon, the Korean War broke out and Wallace was sent to Korea while Jane returned to Middlebury.

Jane’s early experience as a military wife set the stage for the next 35 years. Wherever, they were, Jane always made young military families her priority. At meetings, she would find the young mother with a baby and hold the baby during the meeting. Young mothers in need of help always knew they had an ally in Mrs. Nutting. She described her 35 years in the Army as “sometimes exciting, sometimes very worrisome, sometimes uncomfortable, and always rewarding.” She served as a nurse’s aid in various Army hospitals, was an Arlington Lady during the Viet Nam War, various women’s clubs and substitute teacher. She was active in the Church, served on the Thornton Academy Board of Trustees, and organized Summer Concerts at Biddeford Pool.

Jane and Wally spent 7 years in Germany, four years in Latin America and the rest either in the D.C. area or ‘good tank country’ in twelve postings across the U.S. Their 22nd move was back to Maine and their roots.

One of her grandsons: “From repelling in combat boots and probably commanding more of the Army than Grandpa; to hosting dinner parties to being a mother and knitting Nana, she lived a life so full we should all be envious.”

Jane is survived by her beloved husband of 72 years, Wallace H. Nutting; her daughter Elizabeth (Nutting) Hood of South Bristol, Maine, son John Trent Nutting (Debbi) of Charleston, S.C., daughter Katherine (Nutting) Haughs (Mark) of Scottsboro, Ala.. and Sally (Nutting) Somes (Barry) of Cumberland, Main; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

The family would like to thank the caregivers at Seal Rock Healthcare, Beacon Hospice, and Homestead for their compassionate care of Jane.

A celebration of her life will be held at the First Parish Congregational Church in the spring.

Dennett, Craig & Pate Funeral Home Saco are entrusted with her services.
