Pulitzer Prize winner Richard Powers will speak about his newest novel, “Playground,” Tuesday at the Music Hall in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Powers, author of the acclaimed (and Pulitzer-winning) “The Overstory,” will talk about his new work and answer questions from Julia Furukawa of New Hampshire Public Radio. Powers’ 14 other novels include “Bewilderment,” “Orfeo,” “Generosity: An Enhancement” and “The Echo Maker.”
“Playground” is set on the island of Makatea in French Polynesia. The event organizers describe it as an “awe-filled book” that “interweaves beautiful writing, rich characterization, profound themes of technology and the environment, and a deep exploration of our shared humanity in a way only Richard Powers can.”
Novelist Percival Everett, author of “James” and “Erasure,” described it this way: “Is there anything Richard Powers cannot write? The world here is complete, seductive, and promising. The writing feels like the ocean. Vast, mysterious, deep and alive.”

We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
For those stories that we do enable discussion, our system may hold up comments pending the approval of a moderator for several reasons, including possible violation of our guidelines. As the Maine Trust’s digital team reviews these comments, we ask for patience.
Comments are managed by our staff during regular business hours Monday through Friday and limited hours on Saturday and Sunday. Comments held for moderation outside of those hours may take longer to approve.
