Portland earned top honors in Food & Wine magazine’s list of America’s best small cities for food and drink.

The list of 10 cities, released Wednesday, focuses on cities with populations under 100,000, including Healdsburg, Calif., Asheville, N.C., Hudson, N.Y., and Burlington, Vt., the only other New England city to be included.

“Portland frequently crashes national best-of lists stacked with heavyweights,” the article states. “Chalk it up to a working waterfront hauling ultra-fresh seafood into a lively arts district or a genuine off-season (though it’s shrinking), which ensures a steady stream of newcomers trading big-city grind for a tight-knit community of artisans constantly refining tiny-town charms.”

The brief writeup mentions Norimoto Bakery, whose baker-owner, Atsuko Fujimoto, won the James Beard Award for Outstanding Pastry Chef or Baker in 2024; Fore Street; Mr. Tuna, where chef-owner Jordan Rubin was named one of the magazine’s Best New Chefs for 2025; and Eventide Oyster Co.

Maine claimed another win as Deer Isle’s Aragosta at Goose Cove topped the magazine’s roundup of the 10 top U.S. hotels for food and drink. This is Aragosta’s third year to be named to the Food & Wine list.

“Drawing on her experience at Per Se and SingleThread, chef-owner Devin Finigan creates refined yet unfussy dishes with fished, farmed, and foraged ingredients,” the writeup states in part. “Expect delicately briny Fish Creek oysters accented with pink peppercorn kosho or agnolotti filled with Stonington lobster, finished with beurre blanc — best enjoyed on the deck with a creative cocktail as the light fades over Goose Cove.”
