Queer craft bar Cocktail Mary is reopening Friday on Market Street above the Cambodian restaurant Oun Lido’s.

Previously located in a smaller space at 229 Congress St., Cocktail Mary closed in January 2025 as founder Isaac MacDougal set about raising funds and searching for a larger home for the bar. Cocktail Mary held a series of pop-up events at their new Old Port space over the past year.

MacDougal received his liquor license for Cocktail Mary Monday. He is subletting the space, on the top floor of the building.

The 1,200-square-foot space can hold 79 customers, MacDougal said, has two bathrooms and positions the bar to take advantage of foot traffic in the Old Port. “When I was in the old 229 (Congress St.) space, I made a list of all the things I wanted,” MacDougal said. “And every box on that list is ticked.”

Cocktail Mary’s bar program features riffs on classic cocktails priced at $13. “We’re trying to keep it simple, streamlined, affordable and approachable,” MacDougal said. The bar won’t offer food or snacks, but customers can order takeout from Oun Lido’s downstairs.

MacDougal plans to open the new Cocktail Mary Friday at 9 p.m. The bar will be open Fridays and Saturdays in May, including for a fundraising event Saturday the 30th from 5-7:30 p.m. for Democratic gubernatorial candidate Troy Jackson.

Starting in June, Cocktail Mary will be open Thursday-Saturday from 5 p.m.-1 a.m.

MacDougal said he hopes the larger space will allow Cocktail Mary to broaden its customer base. “One of the thing that’s important about having queer spaces is the broader community coming in and experiencing queer joy,” he said. “I don’t want to be a gatekeeper. I want everyone to feel comfortable coming in and being a part of what we’re building here.”
