Film classics screen in July

The library’s July Monday Matinee, which screens on July 25 at 1 p.m., is the Coen Brothers comedy, “Hail, Caesar”, starring George Clooney, Josh Brolin and Scarlett Johansson. Rated PG-13, the film follows the efforts of a Hollywood studio fixer in the 1950s to keep stars scandal-free.

On Wednesday, July 27, at 7 p.m., the Merrill Film Society will screen “The Graduate,” the iconic 1967 Mike Nichols film that launched the career of Dustin Hoffman.

Kids’ reading program abuzz

At the midpoint of its summer reading program for children, Merrill Memorial Library has almost 400 young patrons enrolled. This year’s program has generated quite a buzz, with myriad activities, many available on a daily drop-in basis, like a special maker’s space in the library entryway, weekly prize drawings, dedicated times for reading to service dogs on a one-on-one basis, free books, special story times for young children, a book group for older kids, Wednesday activity days and more.

In keeping with the Reading Olympics theme, each enrollee receives sunglasses and a Merrill Memorial Library water bottle at sign-up and a Polaroid photo of himself/herself on the Winner’s Stand, with laurel wreath, medal and torch upon reaching the goal number of books.
