Portland police investigated a Tuesday morning stabbing that left two men wounded, after reports of people fighting.

Officers responded to a 911 call around 3:30 a.m. for people fighting in the area of 132 Marginal Way. When officers arrived, they identified several people and determined at least two men had fled in a car.

A short time later, the car was found in a snowbank at the corner of Pine and State streets, near Longfellow Square in downtown Portland. Both men in the car had been stabbed during the fight and were taken to Maine Medical Center with what police describe as wounds that are not life-threatening. Police did not release the names of the men, their ages or where they are from because neither has been criminally charged.

Lt. James Sweatt said the people involved in the fight have been identified by police and said they had “familiarity” with one another. He said there is no risk to the public from the incident.

A juvenile male was arrested on unrelated warrants for a probation violation and failure to appear in court.

The Criminal Investigations Division is continuing to investigate the incident, Sweatt said. Anyone with information or who may have witnessed the incident is asked to call the Portland Police Department at 874-8533.
