STANDISH — A vehicle found submerged this morning near Eel Weir dam in a canal off the Presumpscot River was a pickup truck that was reported stolen last night from a Portland hotel.

No one was inside the white Ford F-150, which carries South Carolina registration plates, when the vehicle was pulled from the water this afternoon by a tow truck. Divers from the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office entered the murky water to attach cable to the truck.

The submerged vehicle was reported early this morning by a security guard for Sappi Fine Paper, which owns the dam. The company opened the dam to improve visibility before the dive team entered the water this afternoon.

A large wrecker that arrived at the scene earlier has been positioned so that divers can attach cables to pull the vehicle, believed to be a pickup truck, out of the water.

It is still unknown whether anyone is inside the vehicle, which is submerged in extremely murky water. Sappi Fine Paper owns the dam, and company employees opened the dam this morning to lower water levels and improve visibility.
