FALMOUTH — Porsches, Ferraris, Lamborghinis, and Mercedes Benzes roared across the Falmouth spur that connects Interstate 295 to the Maine Turnpike tonight, triggering police concerns that some of the drivers were exceeding the speed limit.

At 6:20 p.m., Falmouth police sent an officer to follow the column of sports car drivers, who proceeded south along the Maine Turnpike.

A worker at the York Toll Plaza said about 40 luxury cars had passed through the York exit by 9 p.m., but he said more than 200 vehicles were expected to travel through Maine on their way to New York.

He said the vehicles were part of the 2010 Gumball Rally, an intercontinental car tour whose route includes stops in Canada, Boston and New York.
