OLD ORCHARD BEACH — Twenty-two years after a minor league baseball team packed it in, baseball has returned to The Ballpark.

The United States Collegiate Athletic Association 2010 National Baseball Tournament kicked off today, and runs through the end of the week.

The Ballpark was home to the Maine Guides and Maine Phillies from 1984 to 1988 and was once called the “best little Triple-A park in the game.”

The Ballpark was later used for concerts, but for well over a decade it has sat idle and fallen victim to neglect and fire as trees took root across the playing field.

A volunteer effort has restored The Ballpark into playing condition – after many had written if off for good.
