Vermont author Howard Frank Mosher will be at the Portland Public Library Wednesday to read from and discuss his latest novel, “Walking to Gatlinburg” (Random House, $25). Set in 1864, the book follows a 17-year-old boy in northern New England who tries to help a runaway slave flee to Canada, then eventually travels to the war-torn South himself after the runaway is murdered.

The talk is part of the library’s Brown Bag Lecture Series, which resumed this month after the library reopened following extensive renovations.
