PORTLAND — U.S. District Court Judge George Singal today ordered the alleged president of the Maine chapter of the Outlaws motorcyle club to be held until his trial on racketeering charges.

Thomas Benvie appeared in district court in Portland this afternoon. He was arrested Tuesday at his home in Sanford, one of 26 members of the Outlaws who were arrested nationwide.

When federal agents raided a house in Old Orchard Beach on Tuesday, a shootout erupted, and another suspect, Thomas Mayne, was killed. Prosecutors said today that Mayne was found holding a handgun that had been purchased by Benvie two years ago.
