LUBEC — Officials say fundraising is going slowly for a park dedicated to Mainers lost at sea.

A small group of community members gathered Tuesday at what will become the Lost Fishermen’s Memorial Park in Lubec, overlooking Cobscoook Bay.

Since 2006 eight area fishermen have been lost at sea. Two others have been lost in an adjacent area of Canadian waters.

Park organizer Shelly Tinker tells the Bangor Daily News about $27,000 has been raised in the last year. The goal is $200,000.

When it’s finished, the memorial will contain a statue of a woman looking out to sea. The names of lost fishermen from Maine and New Brunswick will be inscribed on the base.
