AUGUSTA — Gov. Paul LePage today nominated another member of his inner circle to serve as commissioner of the Department of Education.
The governor named Stephen Bowen, of Rockport, to the post at a State House press conference.
Bowen is currently serving as LePage’s senior policy adviser on education. He served as director of the Center for Education Excellence at the Maine Heritage Policy Center, a conservative think tank, until LePage’s inauguration last month.
If confirmed by the Senate, Bowen would be LePage’s second senior policy adviser to take over a cabinet post. Mary Mayhew, a senior adviser to LePage on health policy, was sworn in last week as commissioner of the Department of Health and Human Services.
