Maine Red Claws rookie forward DeShawn Sims was named the 2011 NBA Development League Rookie of the Year.
Sims, a former Michigan standout, finished fourth overall in scoring during the regular season and led all league rookies with 20.3 points per game.
He had seven 30-plus point performances for the Red Claws, including a season-high 35 points on March. 3.
Said team President and General Manager Jon Jennings in a statement: “The obstacles DeShawn has been forced to overcome in his life have been well-documented, and they are things that would cause a lesser man to choose another path. That determination earned him his way to the NBA D-League All-Star Game as a rookie, it brought him the Rookie of the Year trophy – there is no question in my mind, his next step is the NBA.”
Sims also earned a spot on the All-Rookie First Team.
Rookie point guard Jamar Smith was named to the All-Rookie second team. He averaged 13.5 points per game.
