AUGUSTA — Gov. Paul LePage has tapped a retired Marine general to serve as commissioner of the Maine Department of Labor.
LePage made formal today his selection of retired Lt. Gen. Robert J. Winglass of Bath. He’d announced his intention to do so a month earlier.
If confirmed, Winglass would take over two months after LePage angered organized labor by ordering the removal of a mural depicting the state’s labor history from the lobby of the Department of Labor building.
LePage said the mural presented a one-sided account of history.
Winglass retired from the Marines in 1992 and served four years in the Maine House before joining IBM Corp.
His nomination requires review of the Joint Standing Committee on Labor, Commerce, Research and Economic Development and approval of the entire Senate.
