AUGUSTA — Lawmakers are considering a proposal to raise the speed limit to 75 mph on a remote section of Interstate 95 between Old Town and Houlton.

On Thursday a legislative committee voted unanimously to endorse a plan to raise the speed limit, while allowing officials the discretion to keep the lower 65 mph limit in certain areas.

GOP Rep. Alexander Willette of Mapleton says many motorists already drive faster than 65 mph on this stretch of the interstate with few exits and few vehicles.

The Bangor Daily News say a 1999 Maine Department of Transportation study found that people were driving between Old Town and Houlton at speeds of up to 75 mph, regardless of the law.

During the Thursday hearing no one testified against the proposal.
