AUGUSTA — A bill that overhauls the administrative and financial procedures of the quasi-governmental agency that oversees the Maine Turnpike has received unanimous endorsement from the Legislature’s Transportation Committee.
The Maine Turnpike Authority has come under scrutiny amid questions about lavish and unexplained expenses, which came to light through an audit by the Legislature’s Office of Program Evaluation and Government Accountability. The authority’s longtime executive director, Paul Violette, resigned in March.
Bill sponsor Rich Cebra of Naples said the bill gives the Transportation Committee the ability to scrutinize the turnpike authority’s budget line by line.
The 109-mile Maine Turnpike carries more than 60 million vehicles per year.
