Springmann died July 17 in Kandahar following a roadside blast that also claimed a  Marine’s life and injured seven others. He was assigned to a combat team of the 25th Infantry Division at Fort Wainwright, Alaska.

Gov. Paul LePage has directed that U.S. and state of Maine flags be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset in Springmann’s honor.
