AUGUSTA — Draft legislation aimed at strengthening Maine’s laws on synthetic drugs known as bath salts is expected to be ready this week, but it’s unclear who’ll be submitting it.
Police and hospitals say there’s been a surge of people becoming delusional and violent after using bath salts, known on the street as Monkey Dust.
Gov. Paul LePage believes a newly enacted law banning the sale of bath salts that makes possession a misdemeanor is too weak. The goal is to make the crime a felony, and the plan is supported by the Maine Prosecutors’ Association.
The goal is to have the legislation ready to be introduced at a special legislative session next month when lawmakers take up redistricting.
