It was a perfect day to be playing field hockey at Cape Elizabeth High Monday, sunny and a nice breeze to keep everyone cool.

Sixteen teams, from Dexter to Hiram to Waterboro and points between, gathered on three fields at Cape Elizabeth for an annual play day, where coaches start learning about their players in game situations.

With the Maine Principals’ Association restricting the number of dates each team can play for non-countable games, the schedule was packed.

Each team played at least five 25-minute games, some played six. For many, it was a chance to see younger players getting their first varsity action.

The regular season begins on Aug. 31.
