LEWISTON — Preparations are being made to honor the life of an economist and Bates College professor who died after being stricken during a triathlon in Cape Elizabeth.
Fifty-eight-year-old David Aschauer of Portland died Aug. 22, a day after he had been rescued during the swimming portion of the Cape Elizabeth Land Trust’s seventh annual fundraising triathlon.
The Sun Journal says a race volunteer and lifeguard helped bring Aschauer to shore after it became clear he was in distress. The cause of death has not been released.
Aschauer had been an economics professor at Bates for two decades.
A funeral for Aschauer is set for Sept. 17 in Brunswick. That will be followed by a memorial reception on the college campus.
