SMYRNA — Police say a horse was killed after it wandered onto a state highway in the northern Maine and was struck by a logging truck.

Maine State Police say the driver tried to avoid the horse shortly after 3 a.m. Sunday on Route 2 in Smyrna, but the truck’s trailer ended up striking the animal. The truck rolled off the road onto its side, spilling logs into the road.

Moments after the collision, a second vehicle came up on the accident scene and couldn’t stop for the logs, causing it to skid off the road into the woods.

The horse had escaped a nearby pasture and died at the scene from its injuries.

The drivers of the truck and the car sustained minor injuries but did not require medical treatment.
