Dump trucks, loaders, excavators and other pieces of heavy equipment leave the Augusta Civic Center on the way to Vermont on Tuesday morning. The Maine Department of Transportation sent the equipment and 149 workers to Vermont for about two weeks to help rebuild roads and bridges ravaged by Tropical Storm Irene. Maine officials expect the cost of the relief effort will be reimbursed from federal emergency relief funds administered through the Emergency Management Assistance Compact. Maine is also among eight states that have sent National Guard members to assist in Vermont recovery efforts.
