Hospital to host diabetes fair

Mid Coast Hospital is hosting a free diabetes fair from 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesday in the Atrium, 81 Medical Center Drive.

The event will feature experts on early detection, eye and foot care, as well as medications, nutrition, physical activity and weight management.

Town to hold Halloween party

The Sanford Parks and Recreation Department is holding its Halloween party from 5:30 to 7:45 p.m. Friday at Sanford Junior High School, 708 Main St.

The party is geared to kids ages 12 and younger. Parents must accompany their children to the event.

There will be a costume and jack-o’-lantern contest, as well as apple bobbing, ring toss, treasure chest and pumpkin golf and bowling.

Revisiting ‘Old Bet’s’ death

Bruce Tucker, president of the Alfred Historical Society, will speak Thursday about the killing of the elephant “Old Bet” near the old Alfred jail in 1816.

The talk will be held at 7 p.m. at the Sanford-Springvale Historical Museum, 505 Main St. in Springvale. Everyone is welcome.

Sheep shearers: Get sharper

The University of Maine Cooperative Extension is partnering with the Maine Sheep Breeders Association to present an intermediate/advanced sheep shearing school from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday at Pineland Farms in New Gloucester.

The training is designed to help experienced sheep shearers hone their skills and gain knowledge.

The cost is $45 per person and includes lunch and reference materials.

There is a new support group for people dealing with cancer from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Nov. 2 at the Y Trafton Senior Citizen Center, 19 Elm St.

Two meetings will be held per month. The first Wednesday is the support group. The third Wednesday, which is Nov. 16, will be an education program.
