Whole Foods floats loan to Maine milk cooperative

Maine’s Own Organic Milk Company has received a $25,000 low-interest loan from Whole Foods Market.

The loan is part of Whole Foods’ Local Producer Loan Program, which is granting up to $10 million in low-interest loans to farmers, food artisans and small businesses.

MOOMilk is sold in all Whole Foods stores in the North Atlantic region. The company is a cooperative of five Maine organic dairy farmers in Aroostook and Washington counties who came together in 2009 after being released from their contracts with a national organic milk processor.

The loan will allow some of the smaller dairy farmers to purchase 22 to 24 cows that will produce an additional 140 gallons of organic milk for the company daily.
