Cheverus 49, Deering 0

Top-ranked Cheverus stopped No. 8 Deering on the 1-yard line at the start of the game and then dominated the rest of the way in rolling to a 49-0 win Saturday in the Western Maine Class A quarterfinal football playoffs.

Cheverus (9-0) won its 33rd consecutive game over three seasons, a Class A record. The Stags will host a semifinal game next Saturday at 12:30 p.m. against the winner of Windham-Portland.

Deering had a first and goal from the line, but couldn’t score in three attempts, all runs. The third attempt resulted in a fumble which Donald Goodrich recovered at the four. On third down from the 12, Goodrich broke outside on a run, made a nice fake on a defender and raced 88 yards for a touchdown. Goodrich finished with two touchdowns while fullback Cody O’Brien had three touchdowns.

Cheverus had beaten Deering, 21-0, the week before in the regular season finale. The Rams (3-6) couldn’t come close in matching that effort.
