Preti, Flaherty, Beliveau & Pachios said it acquired the Boston intellectual property firm Weingarten, Schurgin, Gagnebin & Lebovici.

Preti Flaherty, which has offices in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Washington, D.C., and New Jersey, said the deal would be effective Jan. 1.

The intellectual property firm will bring technical and legal expertise to Preti Flaherty and a client base that ranges from large multinational corporations to universities to venture-backed start-ups, Preti Flaherty said.

“Joining forces with the WSGL attorneys gives our clients direct access to their deep experience in patent and trademark prosecution, copyrights and all other aspects of IP law. This will expand our IP capabilities further into technical fields such as engineering, software development and biotechnology and greatly expand our patent litigation capabilities,” said Preti Flaherty’s Managing Partner, Jonathan Piper.

The two firms will consolidate their Boston offices at WSGL’s location at Ten Post Office Square, Preti Flaherty said.
