Children’s author to share inspirational civil rights tales

Children’s author Valerie Tutson visited fourth- and fifth-graders of the Sea Road School recently to share a few inspirational stories about individuals who took a stand during the civil rights movement.

Tutson has won several awards, including the Metcalf Award for Media Excellence, for her work.

Ravi Patel wins school Geographic Bee title

Harrison Middle School eighth-grader Ravi Patel has won the first round of the 25th Annual National Geographic Bee and title of school champion for the event, which asks students to correctly answer oral questions on geography.

The other school finalists included runner-up Nate Dealamen, along with Joan Estabrook, Zach Hamilton, Joe Inger, Olivia O’Halloran, Cal Owen, Carolyn Snow, Sage Watterson and Tucker Whitney.

Patel will now take a written test to determine whether he is eligible to compete at the state Bee, set for April 5 at the University of Maine at Farmington.

St. Brigid teacher, class enjoy fruits of nomination

St. Brigid Catholic School Grade 3 teacher Cindy Halpin was selected as a nominee in Coast 93.1’s Teacher Appreciation Month Competition after being nominated by a student in an essay.

Nominee Halpin’s class won a pizza party, provided by Willow’s Restaurant.

Halpin and the student who nominated her also each received four tickets to the recent Disney on Ice show at the Cumberland County Civic Center.

If Halpin wins the competition, her classroom will receive an Apple iPad.
