BOSTON – Scott Wilson scored the go-ahead goal with 7:30 remaining in the third period as top-seeded UMass-Lowell rallied for a 2-1 win over Providence Friday in a Hockey East tournament semifinal.

A.J. White also scored for the River Hawks (25-10-2).

Jon Gillies had 31 saves for Providence (17-14-7), but couldn’t hold off the River Hawks in the third.

The Friars had held a 1-0 lead since Kevin Rooney poked in a rebound with 11:01 left in the first.

BOSTON UNIVERSITY 6, BOSTON COLLEGE 3: Danny O’Regan scored twice in the third period as the Terriers rattled off five straight goals, extending Coach Jack Parker’s 40-year tenure at least one more game.

The coach is retiring at the end of the season, which appeared to be eminent when the Eagles (22-11-4) took a 2-0 lead in the second period.

BAYLOR 89, ARIZONA ST. 86: Pierre Jackson had 26 points and had 16 rebounds to lead Baylor to an 89-86 win over Arizona State on Friday night in second-round action in Waco, Texas.

HOFSTRA: Men’s basketball coach Mo Cassara was fired following a 7-25 season rife with offcourt issues that included the arrests of six players.

ALABAMA: Former Crimson Tide football player and Tennessee Volunteers coach Bill Battle, 71, was hired as athletic director, replacing Mal Moore who stepped down on Tuesday amid health concerns.

MAINE: Senior hockey co-captain Joey Diamond signed an amateur tryout contract with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, the AHL affiliate of the New York Islanders.

In his four seasons at UMaine, Diamond scored 53 goals and had 48 assists in 149 games.

Former UMaine goalie Garth Snow is general manager of the Islanders while another ex-Black Bear, Scott Pellerin, is coach.
