Army National Guard 2nd Lt. Ian P. Hayes graduated from Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga., and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Army. Hayes is the son of Carol Hayes of Buxton and Ken Hayes of Waterville, Ohio. He is a graduate of Gorham High School and the University of Maine at Orono.

Air National Guard Airman 1st Class Elyse N. Donahue graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas. Donahue is the daughter of Francis Jr., and Patricia Donahue, Shapleigh. She is a 2004 graduate of Kennebunk High School and a 2008 graduate of Johnson State College.

Army Pvt. Samuel G. Barr graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. Barr is the son of Kelly and Donald Barr of Gorham and is a 2012 graduate of Gorham High School.

Southern Maine Squadron of the Sampson Air Force Base Veterans Association meets at noon July 11 at The Dolphin Marina, 515 Basin Road, Harpswell. This is an informal get-together of veterans who completed basic training at Sampson AFB, their wives, companions and guests. All veterans are welcome. Louise Van Thorpe of Brunswick was recently honored by The Casco Bay Council of the United States Navy League for her service to the league. A member since 1989, she has been very active at both the local and national levels, including serving as president of the Casco Bay Council during 2001/2002, New England Regional president in 2004/2005 and as a member on the Coast Guard Affairs Committee from 2006 through 2009.

Van Thorpe first came to Brunswick as a Navy wife. After being widowed with young children, she worked as director of housing at Brunswick Naval Air Station.
