CHICAGO — Former Deering High pitcher Ryan Reid was sent down to Triple-A Indianapolis by the Pittsburgh Pirates to make room on the roster for A.J. Burnett, who was activated from the disabled list and started Sunday’s game against the Chicago Cubs.

Reid, a right-handed reliever, pitched well in his first stint in the majors after getting called up from Indianapolis on June 3, posting a 1.64 ERA with one save in 11 innings.

“He pitched multiple innings, what we were looking for from him, and was very effective,” Pirates Manager Clint Hurdle told MLB.com.

“It was great experience for (Reid), and his walkaway is that, I think, it will make him even better. He was looking for an opportunity for a fresh start, and he got it here. He was lost in the shuffle where he was.”

Reid is in his first season in the Pirates organization after seven years in the Tampa Bay Rays system. Before his promotion to Pittsburgh, he was 6-1 with one save and a 0.52 ERA in 342/3 innings for Indianapolis.

RANGERS: A kinder, gentler Manny Ramirez said he feels no pressure and has no timeline in his latest attempt to get back to the big leagues.

The 41-year-old slugger hit cleanup Sunday night for Triple-A Round Rock, three days after joining the Rangers on a minor league contract. He was 1 for 3 with a walk and a strikeout.

The 12-time All-Star who once forced his way out of Boston and was suspended for testing positive for banned drugs said he is “changed, made better” by his experiences.

Ramirez said he’s happy to have “a chance to play the game I love.” He hasn’t appeared in the majors since 2011 with Tampa Bay. A comeback attempt last year with Oakland failed, and he recently finished a three-month stint in Taiwan.

Right-hander Nick Tepesch and designated hitter Lance Berkman are headed to the disabled list.

Tepesch, who has inflammation in his right elbow, complained of soreness on Saturday, a day after getting the win in a 10-5 victory against the Astros.

Berkman injured a muscle in his hip and back area in Saturday night’s 9-5 loss to Houston. He was removed for a pinch-hitter in the seventh inning.

INDIANS: Cleveland sent inconsistent starter Carlos Carrasco back to Triple-A Columbus, a day after he was clobbered in a loss to Detroit.

Carrasco is 0-4 and has not won in the majors since June 29, 2011.

YANKEES: Shortstop Derek Jeter singled and tested his surgically repaired ankle on the basepaths in his second rehabilitation game with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Working his way back from a twice-broken left ankle, Jeter was the designated hitter in rehab game No. 2 and finished 1 for 2 with two walks and a run. He will play shortstop for the RailRiders on Monday night.

PADRES: San Diego placed catcher Yasmani Grandal on the 60-day disabled list because of a sprained right knee and called up catcher Rene Rivera from Triple-A Tucson.

Grandal was injured Saturday in the third inning of the Padres’ 5-4 loss to Washington when Anthony Rendon slid into Grandal’s leg at the plate.

MARLINS: Kevin Slowey will take Ricky Nolasco’s spot in the rotation Monday against the Braves, after Nolasco was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Manager Mike Redmond said the team anticipated the trade and kept the Slowey available. He is 3-6 with a 4.24 ERA.

ROCKIES: Starting pitcher Roy Oswalt left Sunday’s game against the Diamondbacks in the second inning because of a strained left hamstring.

The right-hander ran to cover home plate after a wild pitch as Arizona’s Eric Chavez came home from third. The throw from catcher Wilin Rosario sailed past Oswalt, who immediately indicated he was hurt.
