Paul Marquis, the boys’ soccer and girls’ basketball coach at Traip Academy in Kittery the last 13 years, has resigned both positions.

Marquis handed in his resignation about 10 days ago. Fall practices begin Aug. 19.

Marquis didn’t want to go into specifics, saying he had “philosophical differences” with the direction the athletic program is taking.

“There are a few things going on, a couple of decisions that were made, that I don’t believe in,” he said, stressing that he had no issues with his athletic director, Mike Roberge, or the parents. “I decided it would be a difficult place to continue coaching there.”

Marquis, 41, actually coached three sports for several seasons, with stints as the head coach in baseball and softball.

His teams have generally been successful. His soccer team won the Class C state championship in 2006. His girls’ basketball teams competed in several Western Class C semifinals in the last six years.

He will continue to teach chemistry at the high school.
