Col. David Smith of Hampden has received the Legion of Merit Medal at his recent retirement ceremony. The medal was presented by Brig. Gen. Michael Bobeck, special assistant to the director of the Army National Guard, and recognizes Smith’s 32 years of service. Smith is the state Army aviation officer for the Maine Army National Guard.

Sgt. 1st Class Mark Ridgeway of Topsham was promoted to the rank of first sergeant in a ceremony held last month at the Augusta Armory. Ridgeway is the new first sergeant of the Maine Army National Guard’s Recruiting and Retention Battalion.

Army Pfc. James C. Bourgeois has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. He is the son of Christopher Bourgeois of Rumford and brother of Megean Bourgeois of Portland. He is a 2007 graduate of Mountain Valley High School in Rumford.

Navy Seaman Robert D. Ficke, son of Cindy Frisbee of Kittery Point and Robert Ficke of Jacksonville, Fla., recently completed Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. Ficke is a 2010 graduate of Traip Academy in Kittery.
