NEW YORK – After Mariano Rivera blew a third straight save for the first time in his famed career, Brett Gardner homered with two outs in the ninth inning to give the New York Yankees a 5-4 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Sunday for their first series win in more than a month.

Rivera (3-2) gave up another homer to a limping Miguel Cabrera and a drive to Victor Martinez in the top of the ninth, tying it at 4 and turning Alex Rodriguez’s first homer of the season into a footnote.

ATHLETICS 6, BLUE JAYS 4: Alberto Callaspo hit a tiebreaking two-run double in the eighth inning, Brandon Moss had a two-run homer and Oakland won at Toronto.

RANGERS 6, ASTROS 1: Martin Perez threw a four-hitter for his first career complete game, leading Texas at Houston.

Alex Rios had two hits, drove in a run and scored twice in his second game with the Rangers, who have won 12 of their last 13.

INDIANS 6, ANGELS 5: Michael Bourn drove in the go-ahead run with a seventh-inning single, and Cleveland rallied from a five-run deficit to break a six-game losing streak with a win over visiting Los Angeles.

TWINS 5, WHITE SOX 2: Kevin Correia pitched seven shutout innings, Brian Dozier and Joe Mauer backed him with home runs, and Minnesota won at Chicago.


NATIONALS 6, PHILLIES 0: Stephen Strasburg pitched a four-hitter and struck out 10 in the first complete game of his career, Jayson Werth had his second straight three-hit game and Washington completed a three-game sweep of visiting Philadelphia.

The Phillies never had a runner in scoring position during their 11th straight road loss.

ROCKIES 3, PIRATES 2: Nolan Arenado hit a go-ahead double in the seventh inning and Colorado beat Pittsburgh for a three-game sweep at Denver.

REDS 3, PADRES 2: Joey Votto delivered a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 13th inning to lift host Cincinnati over San Diego.

Xavier Paul tied it for the Reds with a two-run pinch homer off Ian Kennedy in the eighth.

CARDINALS 8, CUBS 4: Pete Kozma singled home the tiebreaking run in the sixth inning and host St. Louis ended a four-game losing streak.

Matt Carpenter and Allen Craig each had three hits and drove in a run. Jon Jay and David Freese drove in two runs apiece.

BRAVES 9, MARLINS 4: Freddie Freeman hit a three-run homer to help Atlanta win at home.

B.J. Upton drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly and Chris Johnson hit a two-run double in a four-run seventh inning that broke open a tie game.

METS 9, DIAMONDBACKS 5: Andrew Brown’s three-run pinch home run broke open a close game and New York beat Arizona at Phoenix.


ORIOLES 10, GIANTS 2: J.J. Hardy hit a go-ahead, two-run homer in the seventh inning, Adam Jones hit a three-run shot in the ninth and Baltimore won at San Francisco.

MARINERS 2, BREWERS 0: Felix Hernandez blanked Milwaukee on four hits for eight innings as Seattle won at home. Hernandez (12-5) struck out nine and walked one.

DODGERS 8, RAYS 2: Clayton Kershaw lowered his major league-leading ERA to 1.88 with eight innings of three-hit ball and had a two-run single as Los Angeles rolled at home.
