ROCKPORT — Maine Media Workshops + College will present Steven Laxton’s documentary series Circo El Salvador from Oct. 2 through Nov. 16 at Maine Media Gallery, 18 Central St.

The exhibition portrays six nomadic circus families with evocative images that capture the vibrancy of the performances, and provide an intimate view of the circus families off-stage.

A press release about the exhibition said, “Eliciting the theatrical circus environment, Laxton’s images are brilliantly lit, colorful and tell the powerful story of one of the few cultural experiences for El Salvadorian locals.”

Laxton is the 2012 recipient of the Arnold Newman Award for Circo El Salvador.

He is currently based in Brooklyn, N.Y. In 2008, he was named one of 15 rising stars of international photography by American Photo magazine.

The exhibit ends Nov. 16 and will travel to PhoPa Gallery in Portland to be displayed from Nov. 20 through Dec. 28.

Maine Media Gallery is open from 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday; and from 11 to 3 p.m. on Saturday. Admission is free. For more information, call 272-6089.
