ORONO — The University of Maine men’s hockey team continued its mastery at Alfond Arena on Saturday with perhaps its most impressive performance yet, dispatching No. 7 Boston College 5-1 before a raucous sellout crowd of 5,125.
The Black Bears, winning for the sixth time in seven home contests, blitzed the Eagles with three first-period goals. Maine goaltender Martin Ouellette met the challenge presented by Boston College, the highest-scoring team in the nation at 4.5 goals per game entering play, by turning back 31 shots.
Sophomores scored all the goals for the Black Bears (6-4-1, 3-2-1 Hockey East). Center Devin Shore scored 37 seconds into the game to set the tone and added a second-period tally. Defenseman Ben Hutton also scored twice and winger Ryan Lomberg had the other Maine goal.
The Eagles (9-2-2, 4-1-1) got a late first-period goal from Scott Savage.
Maine plays next Friday and Saturday at Vermont, still in search of its first road victory.
