Municipal workers in Yarmouth received an unexpected day off Friday, after a heating element froze, leaking water and leading to falling temperatures in the building.
Town Manager Nat Tupper ordered town employees to stay home after the heating unit in the community room froze, causing a pinhole leak in a pipe, he said in an email message.
Water levels in the heating system dropped, triggering an automatic shutoff of the boiler.
Heating maintenance crews were working to repair the damage, and Tupper said he expected heat to be restored to the building by the afternoon.
“At the end of the day, this will not be a big deal, thankfully,” he wrote.
Town offices usually close early at 1 p.m. on Fridays. Tupper said the building would likely have warmed up just in time for workers to leave for the weekend.
