Portland police said they are investigating reports of a shooting downtown early Saturday morning.

Lt. Robert Martin said several people called to report hearing shots fired at State and Danforth streets around 7 a.m. Saturday. One witness said two black men were fighting and one pulled a gun and shot at the other before running off and then jumping into a car and driving away, according to Martin.

When police arrived, both men apparently had left the area, he said.

Hospitals would have to report it to police if someone showed up with a bullet wound, he said, and there were no reports as of late Saturday night.

The case will be turned over to the department’s detectives for further investigation, Martin said.
