BANGOR — A military veteran who served in Iraq has been sentenced to six months in federal prison for stealing more than 400 pounds of copper from a VA hospital, which he sold to support his drug habit.

Because Derek Conrad Less of Richmond has already been held six months since his arrest, he was released under probation for three years and ordered to pay more than $2,500 in restitution.

His legal troubles are not over, however. The 26-year-old Less still faces state charges for allegedly breaking into an Augusta home and a city jewelry store.

Federal prosecutors say Less stole copper wire and plumbing fittings from the VA Maine Healthcare Systems-Togus in July and August 2012.

His lawyer said in court that his client served in Iraq and apologized.
