June 8 was a picture-perfect day in Maine for the Kennebunks Tour de Cure bike ride, starting at the Wells Reserve at Laudholm.

This is a heartfelt “thank you” to all volunteers and all of those who rode to raise funds for diabetes research. Many of the riders have diabetes themselves. Even my endocrinologist rode – and you did a great job, Dr. B.!

I was 9 when I was diagnosed 58 years ago, and treatment sure has changed for the better. Insulin pumps, meters, sensors, better insulin, tiny needles and so much more.

Unfortunately, diabetes is still a serious and deadly disease. Remember to keep your doctor appointments, take good care of yourself and test, test, test. It is easy and relatively painless and so important.

So thanks again, Tour de Cure and the American Diabetes Association. You have made a difference.
