BENTON — A Clinton man is in critical condition after he lost control of the car he was driving and crashed into trees on Bellsqueeze Road on Thursday morning, police said.

Peter Speropolous, 21, was heading south on the road at around 10:15 a.m. when he lost control, crossed both lanes and crashed into trees near 325 Bellsqueeze Road, said Trooper Aaron Turcotte of the Maine State Police.

Speed, and the use of a temporary spare tire on the rear of the car, are believed to have been factors in the accident, which is still under investigation, Turcotte said.

The speed limit in the area is 45 mph.

Speropolous was taken by LifeFlight helicopter to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.

There were no other vehicles involved in the accident and Speropolous was the only occupant of the car, said Turcotte.

The car, a 2002 Subaru Legacy, was destroyed, he said.

The Fairfield Fire Department also responded.
