After reading your account of our two senators visiting the Central American immigrant children in Texas (“Maine Sens. King, Collins tour Texas border, differ over where blame lies”, Aug. 2), I could not help wondering whether either of them had ever read the poem by Emma Lazarus on the Statue of Liberty. Apparently we no longer want “huddled masses yearning to breathe free.”

I could not help wondering also how a parent would be fearful enough for the life of his or her child to permit that child to make such a treacherous journey. Would any of us?

It is time we stopped thinking of these desperate children as just “illegal” numbers, but rather as human beings created in God’s image – and treat them as such!
