The Maine Sunday Telegram has much to commend it in terms of high-quality local reporting. The Business Sunday section, however, is a notable exception.

Week in and week out, it consists of a money-matters column plus two other consumer/lifestyle articles. Week in and week out, all three items are reprinted from standard national sources.

Here is a recent sampling of what passes for business “thought pieces” in the Sunday edition.

Aug. 17: “Is wearable tech wearing thin?” (a Los Angeles Times article about a national dropoff in sales of trendy devices that were never trendy here).

Aug. 10: “Credit unions: Time to join?” (a Washington Post article about the growing national popularity of credit unions, without mention that credit unions have long enjoyed unusual popularity in Maine).

Aug. 24: “Which wireless plan? You make the call” (no comment required).

With the many economic challenges facing this state, is there nothing worth reporting in the business section of the most widely read edition of Maine’s largest newspaper?
