Maine State Police are looking for a purple sport utility vehicle and its registered owner after the car led troopers on a high-speed chase before a supervisor called it off because of a risk to the public.

A trooper working a construction detail in Durham at 9 a.m. had just finished writing a ticket when the purple 1999 Chevrolet Tracker sped through the construction zone, almost hitting two flaggers, said Lt. Walter Grzyb. The trooper activated her emergency lights and sirens and the car sped off.

The trooper chased the car on Swamp Road and Route 136 with speeds reaching close to 100 mph before a supervisor called it off after the suspect’s car passed vehicles on the left and the right and forced other cars off the road, Grzyb said.

Another trooper spotted the car at another section of Durham and it again took off. Meanwhile, motorists were calling police to report the driver for reckless driving, he said.

Police obtained a license plate number and late Tuesday afternoon were still looking for the car or its registered owner, Edwin Duquette, 48.

Anyone with information is asked to call 657-3030.
