The tragic death of Dr. Jim Laurita, founder of Hope Elephants, is heartbreaking.

My interest in elephants was spurred this summer during a trip to Thailand on a program with Loop Abroad, where I had the opportunity to volunteer at the Elephant Nature Park, a world-renowned sanctuary. I learned about these sentient creatures, as well as all the different forms of abuse that are inflicted upon elephants across the world.

Once I returned to Maine, I was anxious to visit Hope Elephants because I had heard mixed reviews about the facility. I was pleased to see firsthand the amount of care the two elephants, Rosie and Opal, received there.

Although I do agree that a larger area would be ideal, the elephants underwent unique medical care that is not available elsewhere, and their health improved after they moved to Maine. The staff are clearly committed to the animals and are spreading the word about how to save elephants, which could face extinction in my lifetime.

Hopefully, Rosie and Opal will receive the same amount of loving care at the Endangered Ark Foundation in Oklahoma and will be able to eventually come back to Maine. The freak accident that occurred should not be used as an excuse to undermine the lifelong achievements of Dr. Laurita.

As one who shares his passion, I hope people will honor and remember him by focusing on Hope Elephants’ mission to conserve this amazing endangered species.
