The Portland City Council approved 4 percent raises for the city clerk and corporation counsel on Monday night.

The raises for Katherine Jones and Attorney Danielle West-Chuhta are retroactive to July 1. Jones’ annual salary will increase from $73,749 to $76,699, and West-Chuhta’s will go from $110,000 to $114,399.

Mayor Michael Brennan has said the two are among a handful of employees who report directly to the council, but their raises will match those given to most of the city’s management-level employees, with 1 percent reflecting a cost-of-living adjustment and the other 3 percent a merit raise.

No members of the public spoke before the councilors voted 8-0 to approve the wage increases.

Last month, the council approved an agreement with the Professional and Technical City Employee Association that gave about 140 city employees raises of 1 percent, retroactive to July 2013 and another 1 percent, retroactive to this July with an additional 1 percent starting in January, followed by a 3 percent increase next July.

The so-called Pro Tech association was the first of eight unions to negotiate a contract with the city this year.
