I am so happy we have a health and human services commissioner who gets it. Mary Mayhew’s op-ed (“LePage administration’s welfare reform policies inherently compassionate,” Dec. 5) hit the nail on the head about moving people from welfare to work.
When is the last time we had a DHHS commissioner who was actually trying to get fewer people on the dole? I have lived in Maine since 1982, and it seems that for most of the time since then, the goal has been to sign up as many people as possible.
Mayhew is correct that true compassion is measured by how many people we can move off welfare.
